About Hands On Miami

Hands On Miami (HOM) is a non-profit volunteer service organization, which addresses the critical human service, educational and environmental needs of Miami.  Hands On Miami's mission is "Building community by engaging people in volunteer service".  Hands On Miami creates, manages and leads effective and innovative volunteer service programs that foster the ethic of volunteerism and promote a sense of community.  Hands On Miami has over 5,500 volunteers who participate in more than 85 monthly service projects.

Citizen Action AmeriCorps Member at Hands On Miami

AmeriCorps is a federally funded program, often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps.   AmeriCorps offers candidates the opportunity for service in a  full time positions at nonprofit organizations like Hands On Miami. AmeriCorps members support a broad range of local service programs that engage thousands of Americans in service to meet critical community needs. Hands On Miami is seeking full-time AmeriCorps members to serve the Miami-Dade community to mobilize volunteers provide  direct service to the community.  AmeriCorps offers a living allowance, equivalent to $15,000 annually, plus health insurance.  This is a weekly stipend paid out twice per month during the time of service.  Members are also eligible for an educational award of $4,725 upon successfully completing their year of service.

 Hands On Miami (HOM) is a non-profit organization whose mission is "Building community by engaging people in volunteer service." HOM manages approximately 85 hands-on group volunteer projects a month serving children, adults, seniors, the environment, the hungry and homeless and more.  Responsibilities

·         Research, develop, manage and lead volunteer projects and initiatives that address a wide range of social issues.

·         Manage and develop relationships with local community service organizations and identify how they can benefit from volunteer service.

·         Collaborate with organizations to recruit and mobilize volunteers, including corporations, families, youth and diverse ethnic groups.

·         Conduct orientations, train Volunteer Leaders and provide ongoing support to volunteers and agency partners.

·         Create resource materials and training sessions for agency staff, volunteers and Volunteer Leaders

 

Qualifications

·         Excellent written and oral communication skills (including via phone and e-mail) and capable of working effectively with a wide range of people.

·         Ability to take initiative, be self-directed and work effectively both independently and as a member of a team

·         Demonstrated commitment to community service and familiarity with community needs (prior volunteer management experience helpful)

·         Superior organizational skills, including an attention to detail, the ability to manage many projects simultaneously and to set priorities

·         Willingness to learn how to plan all aspects of physical renovation projects, including painting and landscaping

·         Ability to perform physical labor as needed during preparation for and completion of projects and able to lift up to 30 pounds

·         Proficient use of information technology, including Microsoft Office Applications

·         Fluency in Spanish or Haitian Creole (desired)

·         Four-year college degree (preferred)

·         Ability to make a one-year commitment to AmeriCorps and Hands on Miami.  Service Term is September 1, 2007-August 31, 2008

·         Personal means of transportation strongly preferred, but not required

·         Background check is required.
