Silver Knight Alumni Legacy Network
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Silver Knight Awards, The Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Hands On Miami are pleased to announce the creation of the Silver Knight Alumni Legacy Network. This new initiative will promote the Silver Knight mission of community service by bringing together former Silver Knight winners and perpetuating their involvement in our South Florida community.
Silver Knight Day
This program is intended to reinforce relationships between Silver Knight Alumni and their high schools.
Program Highlights:
- On the morning of May 20th, and annually in the spring thereafter, past winners will revisit their high schools and speak to students about the importance of giving back to the community.
- Alumni will share their insight on the value of academic achievement and the benefits of sharing one’s talents through community service.
Silver Knight Speakers Bureau
This group of professionals will be available to schools and organizations throughout the year to talk about a wide range of Silver Knight related topics, such as education, mentoring, career development, community service, and their own professional specialties.
Program Highlights:
- Hands On Miami will work with the presenters and organizations requesting speakers to ensure that all presentations are relevant to the requesting organization and their audiences.
- The Miami Herald/El Nuevo Herald will promote the Speakers Bureau through their Community Affairs outreach program.
Silver Knight Mentoring Program
Mentors can enhance the lifelong learning experiences for their mentees and create developmental opportunities by sharing ideas and information that expands their mentees’ awareness, insight, and perspective.
Program Highlights:
- Hands On Miami will find suitable matches between new Silver Knight Award winners with mentors from among a volunteer pool of former winners.
- To ensure success of the matches, mentors and mentees will fill out a profile sheet that will provide HOM with information to create a productive matches.
- Matches will be made with professional and personal interests in mind.
- HOM will host and schedule mentor/mentee outings.
Silver Knight Day of Service
Community service is the most significant criteria for winning a Silver Knight Award. Engaging Silver Knights as adults, leveraging their professional success, intellect and experience to benefit the community is the goal of this program component.
Program Highlights:
- Day of Service will provide an opportunity for winners to champion the value of service by their example, provide real impact on a community need, and share time with each other in the process.
- HOM will create a 1 day project that matches the interests and energies of the participating Silver Knights.
- Project will contain elements of team building and relationship building that will foster the group identity.
- HOM will create a Steering Committee of Silver Knights who want to get more involved and are willing to share their ideas.
- HOM will work with this group to develop a project that will be suitable for Silver Knight alum.
