YVC Community Service Summer Camp 2008!

Do something special this summer! Learn and serve in Miami with the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) Summer Community Service Camp! Open to all Miami-Dade youth residents, ages 13-17.

·          Earn community service hours in one week by exploring critical issues in our community related to homelessness, environmental issues, disaster preparedness, and more

·          Hear from exciting guest speakers

·          Participate in meaningful, direct-service projects like feeding the homeless, dancing with senior citizens who have Alzheimer’s disease, or restoring the ecosystem to a native mangrove estuary

·          Take part in fun, high energy, ‘Hands On’ learning activities

·          Learn to make a life-long commitment to volunteering

·          Gaining skills in team-building, leadership and thinking critically about how you can make a difference in your community!

This year, Hands On Miami is hosting 5 summer camp sessions. Each session will be organized by focusing on 1-2 specific themes or topics. Spend a week with YVC to earn community service hours by participating in fun, meaningful and rewarding camp sessions dealing with the environment, homelessness, people with disabilities, disaster preparedness and more! Each session combines direct-service projects with fun, dynamic educational activities on the weekly topic, as well as leadership exercises to increase teambuilding and leadership skills.

Choose from one of these exciting camp sessions:

·        Environment and Cultural Issues Camp: June 16th – June 20th.

Miami Beach High School, Miami Beach.

(*Note: this session is open to Beach High students only)

·        Homelessness and Health Issues Camp: June 23rd – June 26th.

Miami Beach High School, Miami Beach.

·        Disaster Preparedness Camp: July 14th – July 18th.

         Emergency Operations Center, Doral.

·        Disability Awareness Camp: July 21st – July 24th.

         Chamber South, Dadeland.

·        Disaster Preparedness/CERT Training Camp: August 4th – August 8th

         Emergency Management Center, Hialeah.

Camp sessions are extremely popular and fill-up fast! This summer, students may sign-up for their top-choice camp session only. If interested in participating in any other camp session, you will be put on a waiting list. You do not have to be a YVC member before beginning a camp session; however registration is not complete until paperwork and payment are received.

All camps run from 9:00am – 4:00pm. You must commit to attending every day of the session to participate. A bus will take you to and from the different community service projects and activities. Dismissal is promptly at 4:00pm. All participants must commit to attending all days of the session. Lunch will not be served. Please bring a bag lunch with you each day to camp.

Active and fully engaged participation in all events, including direct service projects and classroom activities, is required in order to earn all community service hours. Participants are capable of being awarded a maximum of 32-40 hours of community service throughout the week. Hours are contingent upon, and will be awarded, based on participant’s active service, attendance, good behavior and participation within all camp scheduled activities. HOM staff reserves the right to reduce service hours awarded to individuals not meeting the above expectations.
