Caring for Casa Valentina (MLK Day 2016)

“Life’s Most Persistent and Urgent Question is: What are YOU Doing for Others?”
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off."  The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."  This year’s MLK Day of Service will take place on Monday, January 18th, and HandsOn Miami will lead the charge locally by activating 75 volunteers in service at 3 locations across our Miami-Dade County community.

The description that follows is for the "Caring for Casa Valentina" project site.

Casa Valentina is an affordable housing and life skills program for at-risk youth and youth transitioning from foster care to independent living in Miami-Dade County. In addition to providing intensive case management, academic and career planning support, help accessing services (such as health and dental care), and life-skills training, Casa Valentina provides fully furnished, comfortable apartments in safe neighborhoods located close to public transportation.

HandsOn Miami volunteers visited Casa Valentina's properties in November as we celebrated HandsOn Miami Day 2015, but only half of the project was able to be completed due to a soaking rain... and that's where you come in!

As a volunteer at this site, you will assist with the refinishing of a wooden deck, ensuring an enhanced physical appearance and weather resistant coating that will protect it for many years to come.

Volunteers will also be needed to assist with fixing a walking path that was recently installed.  Volunteers supporting this component will need to be comfortable using shovels and picks to trench an area of ground and then install landscape edging in the trench.  A HandsOn Miami Project Leader will be onsite to guide the volunteers through the tasks, but we will need to be sure that those doing the trenching are comfortable using hand tools and capable of doing work that is slightly more physically demanding.

Sign up for this project, and help us Care for Casa Valentina!
