SPECIAL PROJECT: Habitat Restoration@Oleta River State Park w/ UPG & Punto Miami

Join us as we join forces with Urban Paradise Guild and Punto Miami to complete a special native habitat restoration project within Oleta River State Park.

This is a habitat restoration project where we will be replacing invasive plant life with native trees and shrubs to help restore and revive a piece of the natural Florida ecosystem. We're starting this one early to avoid the heat - you can thank us when you get there! ;)  Start time is 8:00 AM, so we will kindly ask that volunteers aim to arrive at 7:45 AM to allot for traffic or delays when entering the park and finding the volunteer meet-up location.

Once you're onsite with us, we will rally everyone together for an informative 30-minute orientation to discuss the goals of the project and ensure everyone is prepared to take action safely and ready to maximize our impact. The orientation will be immediatley followed by 2 hours of real work (plan to get grubby), and the project will be wrapped up with a 30 minute post-project reflection of everything we accomplished.

The event will be followed by refreshments under a shade pavilion by the water so feel free to bring your beach gear and take a dip to cool off. Kayaks will be available for a few hours for volunteers to enjoy as a thank you for their time and work (must have a valid photo id in order to make use of the kayaks).  All volunteers will receive complimentary Park access for the day to enjoy the beachfront, coastline, butterfly nature trails, bike trails, and much more.

VOLUNTEERS NEED TO KNOW:
  • Please plan ahead so that you can arrive on time.  We will be working in a remote area of the Park and it will take some time to get through the Park's admission's booth/guardhouse and to the worksite.
  • Bring a water bottle. We will have a way for you to refill it, but we cannot provide you with a container.
  • Volunteers must wear closed toe shoes - for the safety of all involved, flip flops and sandals will not be permitted and those wearing flip flops or sandals will not be allowed to actively participate in the full volunteer experience.
  • Dress for the weather; this is Florida so it will be hot and humid.  Dress comfortably and bring along a hat, bandana, sunglasses, and anything else that will keep you comfortable and protected from the sun.
