Make A Difference Day 2016: "The Fin Project: From Swords Into Plowshares"

HandsOn Miami's ServiceWorks AmeriCorps VISTA team will celebrate Make A Difference Day on Saturday, October 22 by inspiring, equipping and mobilizing people to take action to effect positive change in our Miami-Dade County community by preserving and protecting a significant Art in Public Places exhibit - "The Fin Project: From Swords Into Plowshares". The work is about turning former nuclear weapons into Art, recycling, and marking an end to war. The installations feature, 22 ""dolphin fins" made of diving plane fins from Cold War era nuclear submarines, were installed by Washington-based artist John T. Young near the water at the Pelican Harbor Marina on the 79th Street Causeway*.

While striking, the installations location leaves the fins exposed to wind, rain, sand and salt which slowly eat away at the paint and can damage the fins over time. In order to preserve and protect this installation and its significance in our community, volunteers will apply a fresh coat of paint to each of the 22 fins, ensuring a clean and impressive exhibit for years to come.

*Young chose a park on the 79th Street causeway because its actual name is the John F. Kennedy Causeway, and JFK was one of the main Cold War presidents.
